Porcelain Veneers Q & A
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin covers placed over the front of your teeth. The wafer-thin covers are made from durable porcelain and are designed to look like your natural teeth, except they’re a better version.
What problems can veneers correct?
Dr. Joseph Mauriello and Dr. Vivian Mauriello turn to veneers to solve numerous cosmetic issues, such as:
Color
Over time, the enamel on your teeth begins to wear down, allowing more of the darker colored interior (or dentin) to show through, causing a yellowing or dulling effect on the surface. Years of staining can also exact a hefty toll on your teeth — think coffee, tea, or smoking. Porcelain veneers cover discolored teeth with a whiter, brighter surface.
Size and shape
Porcelain veneers also correct problems with misshapen, chipped, or worn-down teeth.
Spacing and alignment
If your teeth are poorly spaced, or they aren’t correctly aligned, porcelain veneers can fix the appearance of these issues without resorting to more aggressive procedures, such as braces. If your alignment or spacing issues are moderate to severe, veneers may not be a sufficient solution.
How are porcelain veneers applied?
If you’ve decided that porcelain veneers are the best option for your teeth, an impression is taken of your teeth and sent out to have custom-made porcelain veneers manufactured.
Once the veneers are finished, one of the Drs. Mauriello prepares your teeth for them. It’s important to note that the first step in this procedure involves removing about ½ millimeter of enamel from the surface of your teeth, and this process is irreversible, meaning you’ll always need to protect the tooth with a veneer.
Once your teeth are prepared, Dr. Joseph Mauriello or Dr. Vivian Mauriello shapes and files the veneer to fit in place. Using a special cement, the dentist bonds the veneers to the front of your teeth.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Porcelain veneers last 7 to 15 years, depending on how well you take care of them. If you maintain your teeth daily with cleaning and flossing, as well as keep up with visits to Mauriello Dental for professional cleanings and checkups, you can significantly prolong the life of your veneers.
